US suicide rates rank as one of the highest in the world. In 2023, more than 50,000 Americans died by suicide, higher than any year on record, per CDC mortality rates. Due to misreporting and under reporting, some estimate that suicide rates are two to three times higher.
On a state-by-state basis, suicide rates vary widely, with the highest rates in what is now known as the "suicide belt," the western states bordering the Rockies. Of these states, Wyoming, where Adam lived, consistently ranks highest in suicide deaths, at more than double the national average.
Many factors contribute to the high rates, including isolation from cities, financial instability, lack of access to good mental healthcare, weather and altitude, and a culture of toughness.
